Lewis Contractors Kicks Off Construction at Port Discovery Children’s Museum

January 10, 2019 – With the ringing of the New Year, Lewis Contractors officially kicked off construction at Port Discovery Children’s Museum. The project involves two new immersive exhibits—the Port Exhibit and the SkyClimber—as well as updated guest amenities. The groundbreaking ceremony included remarks from Maryland House Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones, Delegate Robbyn Lewis, capital campaign co-chair John Shmerler, and Museum President Bryn Parchman. The ceremony was covered by WJZ. (Coverage can be viewed here.)

Other Museum improvements include an efficient new lobby, new nursing area, more family seating areas, and renovated lunchroom and restrooms. The new exhibits and improvements mark the Museum’s most ambitious renovation since opening in December 1998, and come after serving more than five million children and families through powerful, purposeful play.

When Port Discovery celebrates the grand opening of new exhibits and improved amenities later in 2019, visitors will soar to new heights on the SkyClimber and sail towards new adventures on a massive ship that is part of an immersive Port Exhibit celebrating the Port of Baltimore. Grand-opening dates and opportunities to explore the transformed Museum will be announced as the Museum is further along in the construction project.

The construction of new exhibits and improved Museum amenities are being funded via Port Discovery’s Playing Today, Leading Tomorrow Capital Campaign. Of the $10.5 million campaign funds needed to complete the planned construction, $9.7 million has been raised to date thanks to support from a broad base of contributors including the State of Maryland, the City of Baltimore, corporations and professional firms, charitable foundations and generous individual donors.

Port Discovery will continue to offer play and learning at the Museum and in the community while construction is underway.
