Lewis Contractors Partners with the Creative Alliance on the Creativity Center Expansion
December 5, 2019 – Lewis Contractors is serving as Construction Manager in delivering the Creative Alliance’s (CA) new, ground-up, Creativity Center. The Creative Alliance is a local non-profit engaged in bringing the community together to experience the arts through educational initiatives, live performances, art exhibitions, and other municipal events. The new Creativity Center will be constructed directly across the street from CA’s main facility located on Eastern Avenue in Highlandtown—one of the three official arts and entertainment districts in downtown Baltimore, and an area celebrated as a hub of artistic expression in the city.
Housed in the former Patterson Movie Theater, the Creative Alliance’s current headquarters has limited space to support the organization’s rapidly growing programing—including educational workshops, dance classes, cooking demonstrations, performances of all types, and more—and is operating beyond optimal capacity. As a part of CA’s expansion initiative, the organization is redeveloping the neighboring property, vacant for years, in hopes to provide a positive economic impact and cultural arts benefits to the surrounding downtown community.
Demolition of the 6,600 SF commercial building that once was a former bar began in late November to prepare the site for the future two to three-story building that will take its place. Although design for the new space has not been finalized, the new Creativity Center will house state-of-the-art classrooms, a professional-quality dance studio, and a teaching kitchen. Just as the name suggests, the intention for the new facility is to provide an open artistic environment that supports innovation and encourages the creative process in every facet imaginable.
Quinn Evans Architects are the architects of record and are currently in the design phase of the project. An exact construction schedule has yet to be determined.
